Specializing in Pediatric Orthopaedic Treatments

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a condition in children, where the ball and socket joint of the hip is not formed properly. This condition is also called congenital dislocation of hip/ hip dysplasia.

Types of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip:

  • Acetabular dysplasia
  • Subluxable dysplasia
  • Subluxed dysplasia
  • Dislocatable dysplasia
  • Dislocated dysplasia
  • Some factors that can cause DDH are: family history of DDH, being in the breech position during pregnancy, being part of multiple gestation pregnancy, and environmental factors like poor nutrition can cause DDH

If DDH is not treated on time, it can lead to walking abnormalities, severe pain, limp, and osteoarthritis of the hip and back.

As part of the newborn physical screening examination, when the baby undergoes an ultrasound scan, DDH will be identified. DDH is treated with a Pavlik harness i.e a fabric splint is tied around the baby's hips to stabilize and naturally correct the deformity.

If this method fails, surgery may follow. Dr. Vidyasagar Chandankere is an expert in treating children’s orthopedic disorders in Secunderabad.
