Clubfoot, medically termed as Talipes, is a deformity that children are born with. This foot deformity can affect either one or both feet. The feet point are pointed down and inwards, with the soles facing each other.

This foot deformity is classified into three different types:

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause)
  • Neurogenic (caused by a condition of the nervous system)
  • Syndromic (related to an underlying syndrome)
  • Club foot can be caused by family history, congenital conditions, lack of amniotic fluid, and smoking during pregnancy.

Signs of clubfoot can be underdeveloped calf muscles, slightly shorter feet, and downward twisted feet.

If clubfoot is not treated, it may lead to arthritis, poor self-image, and difficulty in walking.

As clubfoot worsens with age, treatment at the right time is necessary.

Generally, club foot is treated in two phases: Ponseti serial casting that corrects the deformity, and then bracing is applied to maintain the correction.
